Fold is a publication about running your own thing — the fee stacking, the API ceilings, and the actual, itemized cost of leaving a platform that was never really yours.

Most of what gets written about the Substack exodus treats it as one migration. It isn't. Some writers leave because the cut stacks — platform fee on top of Apple's cut on top of payment processing, taken off subscriber revenue before it ever reaches them. Others leave because they've hit a ceiling: no API, no webhooks, nothing to build on once the newsletter stops being enough. Those are different problems with different fixes, and we try to write about the second one honestly instead of pretending it's a universal complaint.

What you get

Free subscribers get the front page and the open essays. Paid members get the full archive, the members-only notes on the mechanics of actually migrating — exports, DNS, what breaks, what a launch week really looks like — and first access to anything new. No ads, no algorithm deciding what you see, no third party sitting between you and the writers.
